Can you tell me what the "spring" in the center of the spider gears is for. It looks like it retains the axles but I can't see how to get it out without removing the entire center section, because the pin that holds the top and bottom spider gears run through the center of the spring. None of the manuals show this piece so I'm assuming this is an aftermarket piece. Ant info you can give would be most appreciated.
That would be a limited slip rear end you are looking at. That spring is what keeps tension on the clutch packs that reside behind the side gears, (the gears the axles go through. You can remove that spring, and then you will have to push in on the axle, and you will see the C-clip. Be careful , that spring holds a lot of tension. And be careful to keep the clutch pack together as well.
I just pushed in the axle until I could see the c-clip between the spring and spider gear. Used a magnet once, and a pair of needle nose pliers as well to get the clip out or just turned the diff with the axle in until the clip fell out. Hardest part is getting the clip back onto the axle afterwards.
Looks like the ears are missing off a few of your clutch disks as well, be sure to clean out the bottom of the case and remove any bits you find before buttoning it back up.
