I have a 2000 Excursion. Like many others, my PDL are weak, but that is not what this post is about. I"ll fix the weak PDL's when I deal with this problem.
When I close my driver's door it won't shut all the way. It simply stays about 1/2 inch open. I can apply pressure on the door from outside and then it will click shut. Then If I bump the door from the inside or hit a bump on the roadway, the door unclicks and opens to the safety latch. I'm assuming the door latch just broke and needs to be replaced??? is this a common problem with Excursions??? and can i replace the latch and not the actuator???
I would first try to move the striker out board a tiny bit. Yours may be inward a fraction of an inch and not allowing the latch to fully seat. Because it's partially seated, a slight jar would be enough to undo it.

You will notice a very small adjustment on the striker might be enough. If the door has movement after closing the striker is too far out. If after moving it out it still releases the latch will be the bad part.
Thanks for the reply. I followed the directions from a thread on how to take the door apart and get the lock/agitator out. I did try adjusting the striker, but this didn't work. I spent $42.00 at Ford and bought the new latch. Then I took the motor apart as directed from a different thread and placed foil over the resistor. I put it all together and it WORKED GREAT!!! Thanks for the reply and thank you tot he guy who posted that fix for the weak door locks!
