I have been looking at picking up one of these old trucks, but I have some questions about what kind of suspension upgrades would be best for trail capability. Also how well does the factory drivetrain hold up to 35's? Thanks for any insight and adivce.
All depends on how hot n heavy of a trail you're wanting to tackle...then on if you wanna run a half ton or 3/4 - 1 ton rig.
35s aren't usually a problem with 1/2 ton rigs if you're gonna run light to medium terrain. Then again, your gearing in those diffs tend to have something to say about it as well
Give,
__us an idea of what you have in mind.
Start with what you plan on doing. (tow/recovery rig, weekend trail warrior, or future hardcore rig.)
Plus what is your spending cap?
Do you want a beater? or something nice?
(-something nice- Fair shape, no need for major work to get fully working.)
Mostly just weekend trail riding, I want something that looks nice and be able to clear 35's while still having some stability on hills and angles. There will be the occasional towing and hauling of items as well.
I would like the truck to look nice, not show room, but decent. My budget cap is probably somewhere around 2,000 for just the lift. Thanks again.
Is this a 150 or 250? 2K for the suspension will buy everything you could want for these old trucks. Knowing what suspension you have helps people tell you what to look for.
I would say look for a 250 because you get better brakes, and most likely 4.10s which are perfect for bigger tires. Most 150s had 3.50 gears, so you are already at a disadvantage.
If you are really lucky, you get a 250 with a front 60
All that being said, I have never had a problem with my front 44 and 36s, but I am not hard on stuff.
Oops, my bad I wasn't sure if that was for just the truck or just the suspension. Around 3k is what I would like to pay for one of these. My biggest desire is to find one with a straight mostly rust free body.
Unless you find a restored truck, odds are you aren't going to find a mostly rust free truck from your area. But, do a search on craigslist and maybe something will show up. I've had two ford trucks from the Pacific north coast and both had rust issues. And I've seen others as well. On the other hand, if you are willing to spend $2000-3000 I think you can find an F250 4x4 in very good condition. Just waiting for you to make it your own.
So, if you find one in your area, be sure to check for rust everywhere, i.e. inside the doors, cab mounts/corners, inside of fenders.
