Did I do the wrong thing???????

I just put a deposit down on a 2004 F350. I love the look of the truck but I am told that the 6L will give me nothing but problems. I ran the vin and it tells me the truck was built in Oct 2004 (I thought that would make it an 05) Dealer showed me a bill for over $1200 for parts such as EGR valve, cooler, idler pulley and something else just replaced on the 18th of Dec. I would like to hear form the guys that have the 6L, should I buy the truck?
It is a 2004 4 door single wheel 4x4 with 80500 miles, it has a few scratches,a dent in the gate and box but is in overall good shape.
The out the door price with tax and plates is $15200 ...$13150 cert plus $249 adim fee and $60 lic fee. So what do you say, are they as bad as I have been told or would an Oct 2004 build be ok?
Cheers, Marc.

The EGR and cooler would have been under warranty. the Diesel has a 5/100,000.

I have a early 03, Love the truck and have over 150,000 miles.

That is what I thought, it should be covered. I am sure the warranty is the same here in Canada as in the States. I know that this dealer bought the truck from the Ford dealer for wholesale so I am sure he paid nothing for the repair. If looked after will these 6L run 350000 plus miles?

I had a 6.0 diesel in the past, and it ran great.

No worries

True as that may be if there is a problem with the engines from the factory it may not matter how well you look after it. I have never had a small diesel engine before but I have had several large ones. I had two 1994 Detroit diesels and they blew at less than 500000 miles putting rods through the blocks. The 1994 series 60 had a problem from the build and were not recalled. I had a 1999 series 60 and I traded the truck with 985000 miles and the engine was never touched other than a top set.
I do not know much about the 6L power stroke other than what I have been reading, most seems negative so I thought it best to ask the experts... guys that drive them everyday.

250,000km on a 2004 crew 350.

2 inj and 2 sensors under warranty, heads and injectors at 204,000km.

truck runs great now, I would still not hesitate to recommend them. the engine is a late 2003 model engine.

Scoot, I have a 04 crewcab, non-dualie, 4X4 shortbox with a 6.0. I love this truck! When I first got her, her water in fuel light was on. I changed the filter, and the light went out. The engine was throwing a code that said her EGR valve was not functioning. After a while, it went off and stayed off. I think the previous owner didn't know how to drive a diesel. I was a mechanic in the Army for 8 years. Us mechanics used to tell our howitzer drivers to drive them like they were pissed off at the engine. In other words, don't baby the engine if you love them. That seemed to clear up any problems we had with our artillery pieces, and it seemed to work with my truck. When I ORB her, there's no code anymore.

I also had a leaking head gasket when I first got the truck. I think that was, again, the previous owner didn't know how to operate his truck properly. Other than these items, I haven't had any problems with my truck. She now has a little under 225,000 miles on her.

I just bit the bullet myself on an 04 with 104,000 on it. I paid a premium price for it I know, gave 18k for it but.........the truck is fricking like brand new......it's a King Ranch crew and is beautiful, well taken care of and one ity bity parking lot ding on it.......interior is immaculate, etc.

It's history shows recent EGR cooler, oil cooler, and EGR valve, and ball joints. To be honest, i'm scared to death of this truck blowing head gaskets mostly. But after reading numerous posts and researching for days I'm more confident about it. If she blows she blows but I feel like i've got a new truck for about 27k less than a new one, and I can have a bunch of work done on it for that.

It all seems to boil down to a few things...........preventative maintenance is real important on these...... Regular things like Fuel filters, water filter, cleaning the EGR and the opening in the intake when you take it out, trans filters and flushing regular, oil changes even more often than recommended, draining the water separator routinely, anti gel in cold weather and even fuel additive the bigger part of the time, ONLY Motorcraft Gold coolant and keeping it flushed and clean, watch the air filter esp in dusty conditions, check your dealer for proper software flashing and recalls and prob more that i've forgotten.

It's just alot more important on these engines than most people are used to but i'm willing to do it and actually have looked at it as a hobby because I LOVE this fricking truck and how it looks, sounds, and performs. So you have to have the 6.0 "fever" I guess to be able to enjoy owning one. I've already found this out in a week!!! lol But man I have the "fever" and i've got it bad because i've been engulfed in it every since. If you're willing to spend time learning about your truck and willing to spend the money on maintaining it I think you'll have a rewarding experience. Just decided to make the commitment and don't look back but look forward and tell your wife she just may have been replaced by a new kinda love!!!!
