Is there a heater element in the primary fuel filter underneath the truck on the frame rail? What fuse and what fuse panel? My dad is about 2 hours away having fuel gelling issues on a 2004 6.0l F350 cc drw 4 x 4. I have already found a good visual on the fuel filter change procedure.... but need info on the heater element.
hey is he sure its a gelling problem when were the filters changed last... does he use any fuel additive.... how cold is it where he is... yes the 04's have a heating element on the frame filter its on the bottom in the front closest to the engine... will it not start at all and did he have any surging problems before the gelling incident or what he belives to be gelling
ok, I am a 7.3 guy mainly.... Dad has an 04 6.0 he bought new though....
truck - f350 drw 4 x 4 cc lb
4.10 5 speed auto
outside temp 0f to -5 f
wind - 20-40 mph
truck starts, idles, but has no power and is stalling when he tries to go anywhere. The vehicle is full of fuel, with additive, and dad even put in some diesel 911 trying to get out of this problem.
There does not appear to be ice and snow packed around the frame rail filter, and he has hadit idling for about 4 hours at a truck stop with no go on the open road.
Dad's a bit annoyed at it right now. He's in Des Moines Iowa at the moment....3 hours from home. Who is good with 6.0's in Des Moines?
If it is starting and idling for hours, it is not a gelling fuel problem. I'm sorry to say I think you have a more serious problem. I won't make wild guesses, but suggest you tell him to call for a tow to the nearest dealer. It should be under warranty.
Again, based on what you've said, I don't think it is cold fuel.

dude, the truck has 105k miles on it.... no warranty left - we thinking fuel pressure regulator on the rail or what?
The module under the driver side frame rail is called an HFCM. It feeds from fuse #7 (30 amp) in the under hood fuse panel. I'm looking at an '06 manual, so I hope it is the same. His owners manual should also identify the fuses if he has it with him. There is also a relay for the HFCM, and it is #302 in the same box.
I don't believe that will be the issue, but you asked about the fuse.
Another question, how long ago did he load fuel? It could just be a bad load of fuel.
Try taking the drain plug on the water separator out with a 6mm allen wrench and see if he gets a good flow or alot of water out for starters. Changing the filters would also be a 2nd start.
