I just got my F150 it is a 2005 4.6L and I want to make it sound good.
Will going to the local exhaust shop and having them replace the muffler with a flowmaster make it sound pretty nice? I'm just looking for a nice growl but the louder the better.
well 120 is not a bad price most flowmaster mufflers sell from 70 to 90 dollar...on my truck i just replaced from muffler back with larger pipe and a chrome tip..but just a muffler would be just as good if your on a budge
Welcome to FTE. Make sure its an actual Flowmaster muffler if thats the route you are going.... far too often these days shops sell a Fakemaster in its place (I believe the patented items in the Flowmaster design have gone out of the patent date... and some Chinese firms knocked it off). Just swapping the muffler out is fine. No exhaust swap is truly going to gain any real power... just sound. If you are handy, you might even save the install charges, and just buy some clamp and proper sized tubing... and sawzall the old one out, and install the new muffler with some fitting. Good luck either way!
well I got it yesterday and wanted to report back if anyone searches and has the same question in the future.
The 40 series Flowmaster muffler I got for $120 sounds great. It is loud, deep, and gurgly. I love it. It drones a bit around 30-35 and is pretty loud at idle. They wanted to sell me a different muffler that was chrome (looked like a honda clown fart can) and we put it on and sounded like a bumble bee.
great to hear you like your flowmaster job...when you muffler breaks in it will be a lot deeper and little less drone
How do you break in a baffled muffler? Not being a smart alleck, I'm honestly curious. I always hear people saying "..when it breaks in.." I can't see how. There is nothing to break in, is there?
I noticed my idle isn't as loud anymore. Is this due to the muffler getting broke in? I thought it was supposed to get louder. Having an I6 my idle tone is the best sounding stage besides WOT. The last thing I wanted to get quieter was my idle.
Surely just by putting a regular replacement air filter in place of the K&N replacement wouldn't have made THAT big of a noise difference if any, eh?

same thing with my mustang maggie mufflers.
Was your maggie packed or baffled? Packed breaks in nicely.

P.S. Mexican muffler shops are great.
Glad you got it done. As long as you can live with the drone they do sound pretty good.
