hi fello FTE, im new to the psd section of this site and stay mainly on the idi section. i finely get the opertunity to work on one of the 7.3l psd's. at work we have a 95 psd that has been have problems for quite some time now. it started off as just a brief engine stall on start up when it would be sitting there ideling. it never stops running at all, the stall is like if someone would just kill the juice for a second. now its doing it more often, like when your driving down the road it will stall for like a second and then it might not do it for a couple minutes. i drove the truck for one day and it never done it once, but the weather was cold. now its not as cold as its been getting and it started acting up. i thought it was the cps that was bad and changed it and its still doing the same thing. i dont want to just keep throwing money at a just might be guess. what could be the problem and hows some ways i can tell?
I would try shaking all the wire harnesses to see if you can get it to hiccup while it's running. Check the Under Valve Cover (UVC) connectors too. There are 4 connectors, 2 on each side.
The large engine wire harness (wrapped with a piece of red tape) that goes over the driver side valve cover may be chaffing. Pull back the covering and take look.

Sounds like the same thing my truck did. At an idle, doesnt stall fully just drops a couple hundred RPM's then catches itself. I changed the ICP and it was fixed.

thanks for the fast responce. i tried shaking all of the plugs on the motor while it was running and no difference. ill be replacing bad glow plugs in a couple days and will check the uvc connections while in there. i was told by someone dont remember who it was that there is a senson thats on the driver side of the fuel filter, between filter and vc you can unplug it and drive it and see if helps, but dont know what sensor?

its more like a one second electrical short, if that makes any sence. what is the icp and where is it located?

well ive definitely come to the conclusion that the stalling problem is triggered off by heat. last thursday i drove the truck with temps being in the 70's and it stalled all day long. today i drove it, and the temps were in the 30's and it never messed up not once. a week ago i drove it for two days and it was in the 40's and it never missed a lick. i dont know what would be heating up to cause this problem. what could cause this and where should i start first?
Intermittent troubles suck. Anything could be causing it. I suggest you get a recording scanner and drive till it fails. Have you had it scanned? A cheap code reader won't help with this one.

havent had it scanned yet ,but plan on it after the holidays.
welp! ? don't know what to tell you without looking at the truck. might look at wiring .
what kind of scanner you use? I am looking at buying a OTC 3499 . I used to have a lot of nice diagnostic tools. OTC 4000 Snap On scanners all the goodies till the dad gum thieves broke in my shop in texas. put me out of business
intermitent problems will make you go crazy. i just had a similar problem a couple weeks ago. luckily i work w a guy who has acces to parts cheap i replaced the icp censor to no avail. i found that teh connector on those gets oily after time and kind of worn out that is where my problem was. the wiring harnesses on these trucks are very fusy check every thing multiple times. dont be afraid to take the loom off and do some digging
