E4OD erratic shifting
I have a 1994 F250 4x4 7.3 (non-turbo), It has a E4OD (giving me trouble), and I have swapped the front Axel for a Dana 60 from an older f350.
Most of the time it runs and drives fine, intermittently stutters or shutters on the 1-2 & 2-1 shift, then started yesterday when it shifts 2-d immediately down shifts back into 2. I had the trans rebuilt about 3 years and 30000 miles back. The shifts have been fairly hard ever since, and sometime I'd let out of it (causes it to shift a bit earlier & softer). 18 months or so ago, my kid brother was driving it when it started to leak from the power steering pump which was full of atf... kid brother overfilled trans (saw red fluid leaking) and forced it home. It sat for @ a year or so because after 15-20 miles of driving overfilled trans would only go reverse no forward. A few weeks back I drained the trans and filled to the correct level. Forward gears came back right away. This was also the first time I noticed the issue finding 1st or 2nd gear (felt like you dumped the clutch in a manaul trans vehicle). It went away and has come and gone ever since. I replaced the Range Selector Switch, and applied dielectric grease to plugs on both sides of trans. Was taking test drive when front drive shaft launched into new RSS and cracked the case. It still moves freely so I sealed er up with RTF sylicone and re-used it. Truck still has problems, and they are still intermittent so I'm thinking electrical? I really need my truck to shift right, and am kinda scared of trans shops... "Oh yeah you need a new transmission!" Any wisdom will be MUCH appreciated.
If you think the problem is electrical you should try to pull any codes, even if your O/D light is not blinking.
Also you should introduce yourself on the pre-powerstroke diesel page and mention your transmission problem, a lot of good guys there who will welcome you.
