Four Wheel Drive issues

A couple of weeks ago, while driving in 4 wheel drive, I noticed that the truck felt like it was slipping gears as I accelerated. A few days after, I was on my way back from a hunting trip in 2wd, and it felt like I was pulling a tank. The truck slowed down in overdrive, 4th gear was better, but it kept slowing down. Needless to say, after examining the truck, the rear end was shot. There was no fluid in it. I replaced the rear end and took it for a drive today. All is well in 2wd, but in 4wd, the truck acts like it is missing gears in 2nd and in 3rd. The roads are all snow and ice covered, so maybe I should not even be in 4wd, but I feel that it the back end does not slide as much in 4wd...Anyways, what could be wrong and how could I diagnose what is wrong? Thanks!

Did the new axle have the same gear ratio as the old one?

According to the code on the door post it did. I will check under the truck and see if I can find the code on the differential. Another possible problem could be the tires. I started to switch the tires from the parts vehicle to the truck that broke. I switched the rear wheels, but the front wheel lug nuts are rusted on badly on the parts vehicle. The tires were much better on the parts vehicle.

FYI.. front and rear tire sizes and gear ratios have to be the same for 4wd to operate properly without binding. It's not even a good idea to use different brand tires with the same size designation as there is often a large difference in circumference.

After swapping the front tires and airing them up, I am going to find out if it made a difference. The tag was rusted on the rear end, so I couldn't tell what ratio. I am going to assume the rear end was never changed. The air pressure in the tires was under 20 psi. I aired them up to 40 psi and will find out shortly. I will keep you posted. Might be later tonight or tomorrow.
