I am thinking about buying a used F250 diesel 4 x 4. Wanting to get some insight on what engine seems to get the best mileage. I am wanting to get the best mileage possible. Looking at 2003 - 2008 models.
You're looking at 3 different engines: 7.3L, 6.0L, and 6.4L
6.4L is the new engine and mileage is terrible. I have a 7.3L and I know it gets decent mileage, especially with a DP tuner. I don't know what a 6.0L truck gets but I would guess with a tuner it is very similar or slightly better because of more control over fuel injection.
If you really want a mileage queen then buy a Dodge with the 5.8L Cummins. It will get around 4 mpg better than any Ford.
Last year for the 7.3 was 2003. They put them in the SDs for the first part of the model year while changing over to the 6.0. My '05 averages 17.8 in mixed driving. Best highway MPG has been 20.3 MPG.
