Differences between 2001 and 2006 F250's?

Looking at two trucks, 2001 F250 and a 2006 F250 (4x4, supercab, automatic, shortbed trucks) The 01 has a 7.3L and the 06 has the 6.8L gas burner. Disregarding the engines which is a better truck?? Which has better brakes, frame, tranny, and so on?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

06 by far IMO. The 06 has a coil sprung front end vs. the old leaf spring giving a far superior ride and tighter turning radius. Has a much more appealing dash, grille and headlights (to me) The 06 also has with the 6.8 will have the torqshift trans which unarguably is FAR superior to the the 4r100 in the older truck. But in the '02s defense, the 7.3 is tried and true and its like the energizer bunny, keeps going and going. Thise are the main things that appeal to me, maybe someone else will have some other thoughts.

The 06' has more options that my 01' don't have. Not sure what you are asking on this.

I guess what I am asking is the brakes bigger and betteron the 06?
Is the tranny more relaible than the 4r100?
I do agree the 06 Looks much better! But as you said the 7.3L is an awesome engine and the truck I am looking at only has 68K on the diesel.

The '06 has a far better transmission, 30% heavier frame, and larger brakes. It also requires 17" wheels (for the larger brakes) versus 16" for the '02. The coil spring front suspension allows around 30% tighter turning.

Good luck

i'd go for the 06 simply cuz its so much newer...

esp. if both trucks have the same basic pricetag...

Well according to your original question (disregarding the engine) then the 06 is what you want. It has bigger brakes and a better tranny. Of course I always thought the engine should be considered when purchasing a vehicle.

The cosmetic issues like grill and headlights can be changed out. I would say to get the real answer for which one is right for you, we'll need to know what you plan on doing with the truck. How many miles per year? Towing anything? Highway or city, long or short trips? Diesel vs. gas each have their own advantages / disadvantages. In my opinion you should decide which engine type is right for you before you started worrying about year model.

If it were me, the engine and it's capabilities compared to what I want/need would be first consideration, then things like options, marginally stronger frames, etc. etc. etc.

Just a note,,,the Brakes on the 06' are much better then the 01',,My 04' (old style smaller brakes)had the good ole brake pulsation when I traded it in at 27k miles,,,My o6' F-350 now has 39k on it with no hint of a pulsation when hiting the brakes,,bigger rotors just dont warp as easy ! The 06' (coil springs)turns much tighter, and rides better then the 04'(leaf springs) style truck.

Another thing to look at,,what type of 4x4 system do they have,,,ESOF(my opinion ) or the old reliable manual shift and hubs (),,Only 68k on the 01' w/7.3 aint bad for sure!

Hands down I would much rather have the 7.3L power Stroke. It is proven to be winner. Too bad I can not get the 7.3L in the 2006 truck!!

The 6.8L will probably pull anything I want and be very relaible.
Bottom line I need a truck for around the house to haul things and to get around on some property I bought. Also I may need to pull my Mustang on a trailer to the track. It will not be a daily driver.
Honestly I am leaning to the diesel, just because of its versatility and longevity.
Also the diesel will get 20 mpg vs 13 mpg on the interstate if ever needed.

OK around here gas is 1.77 (not the cheapest) so at 13 mpg it is 13.6 cents a mile and diesel is 2.59 (easier to find gas less than 1.77 than cheaper diesel) 12.9 cents a gallon. so it is not even an extra penny a mile.

If you want to hot rod the truck the 7.3 is a better choice, but for towing and how you describe what you will use the truck for the 06 a better choice especially if it has the integrated brake controller.
