Hi
A friend of mine got this 2001 mod Ex. 7,3 turbo diesel.
2 weeks ago, after starting the engine, it ran for a few minutes and stopped.
It did the same a few times more. So we changed the fuelfilter, and drained the system. We had cold weather at this time.
The weather became a bit warmer, 3 drgrees C. And now the car was running as normal.
It became colder again, and the same happend. It will start up, and it stops after a few minutes. (It stops very rapidly).
Can do this 3-4 times and it wont start at all.
Next day it will start again, run for a few minutes, and stop again.
We took out the new filter, and there is no signs of water.
I am not to sure about the fuel system on this car, but we was thinking if there is a fuel shut off valve, maybe it is somthing to do with that one?
Or is there someone out there had simelar problems??
Go to walmart's automotive section and look for a white bottle that says : "Power Service Diesel Fuel Winter Blend". Run that in the tank per the directions and should make starts and warm ups a whole lot easier. Worked wonders for me during the bitter winter of 2005.
I believe it is the CAM sensor on the front of the motor by the harmonic balancer. There was a recall on the 7.3 sensors so you might be able to get it replaced for free. You would probably have better luck asking the question on the 7.3 forum.

That is what is sounds like to me. I just replaced mine last week. There is an open recall on them. I talked to a Ford mechanic, and thats what he told me. Woulda cost more for a tow than for me to fix it.
Yup. Try CPS. They are cheap now and can be had for free from the dealer on recall. Easy fix. 10 mm socket, short extension and screwdriver to pry it out. If you are looking ath the front of thge block it is in about the 10 o'clock position on the crankshaft. Has a small plug on it with two wires.
If that doesn't fix it ask a question in the 7.3 forum. There are alot of good guys there.
It took a lot of effort to get the CPS on recall. The dealer over here said there was no recall on it, he was wrong.
We got the part yesterday, and we changed it today.
It fired right up... And it is still running ( 2 hours).
So it looks like this was spot on.
Thanks to everybody..............
