I've only had my '99 7.3L SD Crew since last June.
There have been several mods done by a previous owner including BTS trans, TC lock-out mod,
2000 front brakes and a mild suspension lift.
But this **** on the dash has me puzzled.
The pic shows a 12 position **** with it's wires and a connector.
Can anybody identify what this must have been for just by looking at the connector?
I am wondering if it was for a tuner...and if so, what type?
I cant get the picture...my co is blocking photo bucket and apparently quantserv.
i know with positions is usually a tuner with different tunes in each location on the ****..Cant say ive seen a 12 position before, mine is 6 position. does the wiring run down to the brain box computer by the firewall down at the floor on the left
Could be a remote control for an amp. I have one very similar to control the sub amp on my Grand Cherokee. Helps to adjust the volume level for different songs and sources. Just a guess.
A buddy of mine has a 12 valve Cummins Ram 2500 with a TC lockout kit and next to his lockout switch there is a **** that adjusts something to do with the lockout. I can't quite recall exactly what it was though.
There are no non-stock gauges present.
I did find an amp under the back seat...sub-woofer removed. But I don't think this **** has anything to do with the stereo.
The wires are tie-wrapped together behind the ****. Not connected to anything. I took off the panel to get a picture of the **** and connector together.
There are 3 wires only going out to the connector (for those that can't see the pic, it has 4 'D' shaped prongs)
I was hoping someone would just say, "oh, ya..it's a.....) but that's ok. I'm thinking maybe it's a resistor type pot for something. There are signs of a CB that was removed as well...maybe it's for that somehow?
I might just replace it with a reverse-light switch or something.
*Added - Just did a search on that 10k mod. One poster (on this site) mentioned having different resistance values on a ****. The previous owner did the TC lock-out exactly like I've seen on some forums, so I bet this thing had several DYI mods.
Got a friend with a 2002 and **** that looks exactly like that. He calls it a "steroid" and says it controls the fuel pressure, timing, etc. When he cranks it all the way up it sounds like big block car with a big cam in it. It actually rocks the truck as it rumbles. I think Steroid is the actual name of the product, not his nickname for it. A search may produce some more info for you.
If it's not lighted, then the four wires is your biggest clue. Potentiometers have 3 pins, common and two poles. There should be very high resistance between the two poles, unless it's centered, different values for common vs the poles. I'd say get out a piece of paper and a DMM. Meter the resistances between all four connectors in each position. This will give you some idea as to what it does and once you have that figured out, you can start on what it controls.
