New to forums...

Hello All!

I recently acquired a 1977 F150 Ranger 4x4 PU and, while I'm not entirely new to Fords (I also have a '78 E150 van), I thought I'd join a forum and see if I could learn something about this beast...

The first thing I checked was the VIN decoder... It seems a bit confuzzled:

Your VIN number: F14SRY43854
Your Model Year is 1977.
Truck Series: F150 4 Wheel Drive
Engine: V8 - 400cid, 4BBL carb, 167-177 HP
Assembly on: San Jose, CA

It does have a 400 but it's only a 2BBL carb...

Since there are some code gurus on here, I pulled these off the door plate for further analysis:

WB: 133
COLOR: BR
TYPE/GVW: F141
BODY: ER4
TRANS: G
AXLE: 16x (I'm not sure what "x" is as there is a rivet covering the top half of the digit - It looks like it could be a "J" or something like that.)
MAX GVWR LBS: 06150
DSO: 1977 73

I do have a picture but I'm at work at the moment and don't have any way to upload it anywhere to link to it - I'll have to wait until I get home before I can do that

It seems to sit a bit higher than other 4x4 F150's I've seen around, is that normal? I guess you won't really know what I mean until after I post the picture...

The guy I bought it from had gone through and done a bunch of work to this beast - rebuilt hubs; bearings; u-joints; etc, etc as he had intended to use it to haul his trailers around but then the timing chain slipped and bent a pushrod so he put a rebuilt engine in (I have the papers for all of this) which runs great except it has a tiny bit of a miss at low-idle that he thinks is being caused by a bit of a compression leak at one of the cylinders - it can't be felt at higher rpms, though... I haven't had a chance to check into it yet to find out what it is exactly... This little bit of a "lope" or "miss" or whatever the hell it is was enough for him to sell the truck and I got it for the paltry sum of $500.00... When the weather warms back up, I'd like to run a few tests to find out what's causing this "hiccup" but, as I said, it goes away when you give it a little gas and it doesn't manifest itself in any way during normal driving (as far as I can tell anyway.)

So, there it is. I'll try to get a picture posted later.

welcome to FTE!

yes the VIN Decoder on this site does have a few things messed up, including the problem you just stated.

well, since your truck sits slightly higher does it have some sort of lift on it?

good luck with it.

...standing by for pics...

Welcome to FTE, sounds like a score! I would also check about adjusting the carb, my 77 had a slight miss/lope and once I rebuilt the carb and adjusted, it idles great. Welcome again and enjoy!

OK, here's a picture... Not a very good picture as I took it in the parking lot of my job but it's all I have for now - I was hoping to get more of a side-shot but by the time I got down to it, someone had parked next to me...

The green on the shell matches the light green on the truck. It has running boards on both sides and yup, those are the original Ford wheel covers on all 4 wheels...

If I'm able to tomorrow, I'll see if I can get a side shot of this thing...

Here are the side shots I took this morning - sorry for the bad quality...

@Dr. Dirt - Dunno about a lift - that was one thing I didn't think to look for while I was lying underneath it checking for leaks and whatnot... This could be completely normal for all I know and maybe I'm just confused or something... My head hasn't been quite right since the doc put me on these migraine pills...

well, I think that the truck sits about the normal height. not a terrible looking truck for being up North. I'd say great buy for $500.
