I want to install a power inverter. It makes sense to install it on one of the upfitter switchs already in the truck to avoid accidental battery drain.
I know where the upfitter switches are.
(From the ford body builder book), I think I know where the relay swithes are (behind the glove compartment).
I have no idea where the terminals/connection points are.
Where are the terminal/connection points?????????????
Unfortunately I did not check my email before spending over an hour looking for the wires before I decided to try removing the fuse box and found the wires.
But now I have a whole new problem with the wire size!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 30amp upfitter switch power lead looks like a 10-14 gage wire. The power inverter recommends tying to the battery with #4 wire (a huge difference). The problem is that the inverter max's out at 6 amps at 120volts, however that is 60 amps at 12volts.
I have to believe that the switches could be used for a winch (hat would pull more amperage than the printer I am planning on using) that would require larger wire. Am I going to have to use the upfitter switch to work another relay?????
Yes you are. And the relay is going to have to be a big one. A relay for continuous duty at over 60 amps, is not going to be cheap. I believe I bought one at a surplus place for $45.00. If you get the idea to use a Ford starter solenoid, it's not going to hold up to continuous duty.
The upfitter switches are there for people who put bodies on the pickups. They are not made for winches, just extra lighting, and possibly charging a aux battery. Winches, lift tailgates, air compressors, etc. are very large loads that take special care and large wiring to hook up. You are going to have to hook your winch and your inverter directly to the battery, and if you want to use a relay, that will have to be out near the battery also.
Just like anything else, a quick, little project is turning into work.
For anyone else who is ignorant like me I fould a site on intalling a winch which is helpful. I am going to use my upfitter switch to control the solenoid that will in turn power the inverter.
