my friend is building a street rod and has 5.0 out of a late 80 truck but painless wiring only has a harness kit for the mustang 5.0HO motor. does anyone know what differences there are with the wiring. and could you use the harness on a standard 5.0?
Assuming the harness you're gonna use is for an EFI motor then most items connecting to it are in the same location on both motors, the exceptions would be the throttle body and EGR.. though I'd be surprised if the wiring wouldn't work on both versions. If this is a carb'd application then there is no difference.
I'm pretty sure the 5.0 HO is from 88 and up CA Mustangs and 89 and up Federal cars. The difference is the HO is a "Mass Air Flow" controlled engine and the non HO is "Speed Density." You can add the mass air meter and related sensors and convert a speed density setup to mass air. My local Craigslist guy sells mass air 5.0's for $650 including all harnesses, sensors, and front accy's.
The EFI mustangs utilized sequential injection and the HO firing order regardless if they were SD or MAF. The Painless wiring harness will require a mustang computer as a result, and the truck motor will need to have a cam with the HO firing order installed, or 4 of the injectors wires in the harness will have to be swapped. Once this is done the harness and computer will operate the engine perfectly.
