I used them (oil pan heaters) in my VW air cooled boxer fours, back in the '60's. They always seemed to work well.

Oil pan. The heater was attached to the bottom of the oil pan. The VW's were never garaged, always sat outside in the cold Manitoba or Alberta (Edmonton, not balmy Calgary) winter. If they were plugged in, they always started.

One good thing about my VW, seems it always started too. I can`t remember if it ever had a heater though I somehow doubt it.

I think the oil pan heater for VW's may have been developed here in Wpg. I didn't have a interior heater for '61 VW, but did for my '69. I used to have to chip away at the inside of the windshield of the the '61...just to see out, when it was extremely cold in the winter.

Evening guys. The oil pan heater works better than a block heater on a 6.0L no smoke no romping (both are normal with a block heater at -30) just a smooth start and happy injectors. Why don't these things come on a stock truck with HEUI I don't know.

Thanks for the follow up brickie, looks like I might have to dig my magnetic one up out of the back seat, and use it!

Here is my 3000 post.
Maybe I should get the magnetic pan heater I have here also. Maybe it will start the 86. It is just sitting on against the side of my toolbox.

After seeing how well it works, the next mod on the list to put a pad on the pan. This evening I put Light Force driving lamps on for the trip back home to Stewart BC. With the lamps on it makes the high beams seem like park lights!
