31 spline 8.8

Im lookin to pick up some 31 spline axles for an 8.8 from the junk yard and was wondering if someone might have a suggestion as to what kind of truck/suv I need to look into for some. Ive heard of explorers having them iirc. Thanks.

what axle housing are you putting them in, they're available in different widths. V8 explorers had them, F-150's had them, and if i'm not mistaken, you could also find them in V-6 rangers of later model years.....but don't quote me on the last one....

Those may be the same width as explorers....but truck axles will be too wide....what are you running for power?

No they are differnet all together. 99-04 mustang is the only thing that is going to work. 79-93 is one length, 94-98 is one lenght and 99-04. All explorers and trucks with an 8.8 had a 31 spline trac lock. Too bad, Just sold a set of 31 spline strange axles with 3'' screw in ARP studs and a 03/04 cobra trac lock with carbon fiber clutches and extra shims all from my '03 GT.

As far as the differential one out of a truck/suv/etc should work though correct. As im guessing they have the same housings?

Yupp, even if it has IRS it will work. The 03/04 cobra is most desirable as it has carbon fiber clutches, 31 spline. But any truck or explorer will work. Not 100% sure if the rangers with 8.8 were 31 spline or not.

You can use 2 LH ranger axles in the earlier cars, but NOT in a 99-04. They are much wider then all the others (about 2 inches)

rangers have 28 spile 8.8s they actualy use the same axle as a 7.5
ALL explorers have 31 spline.
and if your looking to put these in a mustang then length im not sure of. but most mustangs as far as i know had 28 spline. i dont know mustangs but i do know RBVs

and you cant put 31 spline axles in a 28 spline housing. bearings sizes are different.

There was no such thing as an 8.8 until 1983.

Not all F150's and Explorers have Trac-Lok, as it's an option.

Prolly 60% or more of these vehicles do not have Trac-Lok.

You are correct. I was stating that the fox body was all the same length.

You are also correct about they dont all have trac-lok, I probably wasnt clear on that. I was trying to say that if it was a truck or explorer it had 31 splines...trak-lok or not. 03-04 cobra was the only car that I know of that had 31 from the factory.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was unsure if the ranger had 28 or 31 in the 8.8

You are correct all mustangs with the exception of 03/04 cobras are 28.

As far as not being able to put 31 spline axles in a 28 spline housing....May be the case with a ranger....I have no idea.... BUT on a mustang that is NOT the case. I build them all the time for guys with no problems. But granted I use Srange axles so that my be the difference?

Does the vehicle have Trac-Lok (Limited Slip)?

If the AXLE code listed on the Certification Label begins with a letter, it has Limited Slip.

If the AXLE code begins with a number = NO Limited Slip.

This has been the case since 1959, the first year Ford offered Limited Slip, which back then was called Equa-Lok.
