Linkage??

I filled up with gas today and when I got back in and went to put her in drive. The gear selector would not move. I tried to force(just a little) and the shifter on the column moved a little(as far as N) but would not move out of gear(park).
I have experienced linkages come loose where your shifter moves freely as if something snapped but mine seems like it is binding or something like that.
Of course ...Murphy and his laws dictate that my truck only breaks down in the winter.
I just got back home with my truck on a flatbed and thought I would post my troubles while I have a beer and get layered up to crawl under my truck in the snow. Checking Manuals too.
Any thought folks?

Just a guess but could be the safety solenoid is faulty. Guessing again I think you should find it under the dash close to the pedals.

Update....Everything is wet and cold...but, the linkage at the tranny is fine.
Alas, I am assuming that it is in the column, as the whole stick just flops around freely(front to back and from P to N).
I am gonna finish this really cold Coors(the only cold I am appreciating today)
and then will get my air chisel out to start pulling apart the column.
I am kidding of course. The good new is that at least I have a operational shifter in my spare truck.
...

edit: just checked linkage to shift cable at the bottom of the steering column and it is fine.

I am now thinking that it would be prudent to mention that my ingnition switch on the column has of late been...well, sort of funky. By this I mean that the key get out of "alignment" with the outermost chrome ring and tabs that turn with the key. Sometimes you have to "adjust" it to be able to insert the key....you can also now pull the key out of they switch while it is still in the run position. That sort of thing. I am now thinking that it is related.
As I stated I have all the backup parts but I have never pulled a column apart before.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thnx

The Dolphin is in the Jacuzzi!!!!
I, with great use of the search feature in the fourms ..found similar problems and pulled apart the column to find that the shift tube had snapped in two, or at least the outer sleeve did. I had to drop the column and remove the tube which really wasn't too difficult. Did the same on my spare truck and made the switch. The selector works great and even adjusted the display needle.

Just wanted to post solution so it is one more case for posters to dig up in the future when they encounter this problem.

I've had that same experience before on another truck I had to work on (a 92 F150) but what made it fun was the shift linkage adjuster down on the frame rail had gone bad and was being held in by zip ties to keep the slack in check, thus not allowing it to fully return to park. If you ever have a I6 on cold startup slip INTO reverse on it's own you better get out of the way.

So got that problem fixed and then 2 days later the shifter tube broke. Got the instructions on here as far as what needed to be replaced and how to do it and by God that truck won't be having any shifter/linkage problems for another 16 years.
