steering column rattle

steering column rattle

A while ago i posted a similiar topic and the response was I had a bad upper bearing going out so I replaced that and the retainer but I still have that damn rattle in the column and it's coming from the gear selector area. When it's in "D" it rattles going over bumps, ect. but if you slightly pull the lever out of "D" so the needle reads between "D" and "N" it goes away. Any ideas what is causing this?

did you ckeck the lower bearing and retainer?
did you remove and check the shift lever mechanism in the column, is the spring and spring seat in good condition?
is the shift "tube" ok? can be worn where the shift lever connects or the reinforcement plate on the tube is broken/unwelded

Oh boy... all good questions.. I did not check the lower bearing or retainer but I suspect it's good because the upper one was good although I replaced it anyway. As far as your other questions when I had the tube out it all looked good but I really did not inspect it. I don't remember a spring in the shift lever mechanism??

This is a good example of not being able to see what's going on and you are
the one that's got to "sign off on the work" by being sure to check everything
thing when you tear into it. Nobody, even the best mechanic, can know all
there is to know about -your- steering column before he-himself tears it apart. :)

As soon as I just now read that yours has automatic crap;) in it I wondered if
that wasn't going to be the problem instead. :)

My simple (manual) steering column had a rattle that was not fixed by the
simple changing of the upper bearing either. Somehow I figure there aren't
all that many out there that have more dirt road miles than mine and still
in one piece... so my upper bearing being shot enough to cause a rattle is
unusual, rather than the rule?

I also drove it 12,000+ miles with the belt off the steering gear too.
(pumped the gear full of STP first;)

You get to tear it apart twice now? ;)
Oh well, it'll be easier and more straight forward to tear it apart this time! :)
