Just replaced all the U-joints, packed the bearings, replaced the bearing seals etc. When I lock the hubs in (manual), I get a terrible cracking and binding sound! Seems to be coming from the differential. Fluid level is good. Does it while driving slow in snow (off road) no turning, forward and reverse, transfer case in 2WD.
F-150 Sport manual hubs/tranny.
Clips are still intact. Ujoints fit very tight in shafts. Sound seems to be coming from the differential. Would a fluid change help, or is the diffy gone?

Reason: Additional question.
No time to check it out today. My slave cylinder went a couple of weeks ago and when we were putting it on the trailor (started in 4WD low range, 1st gear) it was really cracking and jumping. While fixing the clutch, noticed the UJoint (drivers side) was completely gone. Soooo, then..... (1st post)!!!!!
Seldom use the 4WD. I do live in snowy climate but with good tires I do O.K. I have a real tough drive though. Stop, put in 4WD, go up drive to house, disengage 4WD. I'm not aging gracefully. Both knees need replaced and the walk up the drive is a real mother!!!!
transfer case chain might be stretched out...doesnt explain the binding sound much but the cracking and jumping at low rpms... mine has this problem its not uncommon it happens if you get real stuck real bad and the fronts dont turn but the back ones dont
