ZF Swap

I just bought a 88 F350 diesel with a zf 5 spd with the intentions of putting it in my 84 F250, will the flywheel and clutch that is in the 84 solid fly wheel work, or do I have to use the ZF dual mass? Mainly because someone I know needs the dual mass for his truck, but his is a 97 Powerstroke, will the one from the 88 fit the Powerstroke? Is the 5 spd the same length or will I have to have a driveshaft cut.

I would keep the dual mass in your truck. I haven't heard one, but they say the solid flywheel with the zf is very noisy, and you think the tranny is going to fall apart any second at idle with the tranny in neutral.

True - IF you don't do anything but swap it.

If after the swap you overfill the tranny (through the shifter tower) with about 2 gallons of synthetic 0W30 oil or synthetic tranny fluid, then the noise issue pretty much goes away.

I'm not that worried about the noise, what I want to know is whether the flywheel and clutch that is currently between the T19 and the 6.9 diesel will work with the zf 5 spd. And also whether the dual mass flywheel that is currently between the 7.3 and zf work with someone elses Powerstroke/ZF combo?

From what I understand the 7.3 idi flywheel is balanced different than the powerstroke flywheel. Not even sure it would bolt up. You can use the t19 flywheel and clutch but I can tell you that the ZF-5 speed will sound like its coming apart with the truck idling with your foot off the clutch. That much noise can't be good for the transmission. If it was me I would use the dual-mass flywheel. Been there done that.

the zf5 and t19 have different shaft sizes and spline count
i have a solid mass in my 89 7.3 zf5 i don't have any noise problems and i don't think the trans is over filled with oil

Yup, the T19 shaft is just over 1" diameter and 10 spline IIRC. The ZF5 is 1-1/4" and 10 spline for sure, so the cluch from one won't work on the other. HOWEVER the flywheel bolt patterns of the DMF an SMF are the same.

Read through these 2 threads
This one includes part numbers to "roll your own" clutch kit...

and this one talks about how to make the swap easier with a cheap body lift - almost essential if you have a turbo.

Then take a look at the pictures in my gallery here.

Those 3 links should answer a lot of your questions. Hope that helps.
