What is thing, (I'm guessing some sort of oil cooler), that my oil filter screws on to. It is cylindical and has a rubber hose on it that I think (cant remember off hand) runs to the radiator. it is attached to the block where the oil filter goes and the oil filter screws on to it. Is it needed, should I remove it.????????
If you leave out the radiator it could be a top end pre start oiler. probably not what it's called but that's what it does. After market, intended to significantly reduce top end wear by eliminating dry cold starts. If that's what it is. Seems good in theory and their not cheap. It's the financially gifted owner's version of topping off an oil change w/ a qt. of Lucas oil stabilizer fo us dat be financially challenged, but never to poor to pay attention. If that's what it is, I'd leave it and replace the EGR & 02's all w/ 177K on em. You where getting "system always lean " error codes. W/ no mention if running only and /or in continuous memory or for which one or both. I didn't look to see if you figured it out yet but I think its something like the EGR not properly seating when it should be closed & no flow.

Does the EGR open on acceleration I say in 2nd gear, that is when I get the clatter, acceleration when there is a load, and I dont hear it in first gear, but with first gear its pretty low and when it goes to higher gear then there is more of a load, thats when the clatter starts. (it is an automatic tranny )
don't know what you or ymeski are talking about in the last 2 posts.
He, as well as others are trying to help me with my clattering/pinging problem I have been having ( check posts EGR TESTED and PINGING PROBLEM STILL THERE)
Does the ping occur at full throttle, part throttle, or any time there is a significant load on the engine?
On acceleration. When I first take off and its in first gear (automatic) It really only does this when you accelerate hard, but in second or third and OD it does it when I push the accelerator to accelerate, like passing another vehicle. If I am just cruising down the freeway, it dont do it untill I pass pass someone.

your post is about the oil cooler, then switches back to pinging which has nothing to do with the oil cooler.
