MAF problem??? Help

My son drives my 94 ranger 4.o 4x4.
Yesterday he turned the key, and before it started completely, he let go of the key and a noise and Poof of smoke came out under the hood. ( I guess it back fired?!?!). It did start up, and he drove it home, but it is idleing low, and stalls at idle. When I disconnect the MAF sensor, it idles fine, but the Check engine light flashes.

I took the MAF sensor off and cleaned it with MAF Cleaner, and it ran OK when warm, but when I started it this morning, It wouldn't idle..... Keeps stallilng. Do I need to replace the MAF??? What else could this be??

All help and comments are welcome.

Does it otherwise run fine? Maybe the backpressure damaged the IAC valve when the engine backfired.

Also, have you tried pulling codes?

Thanks for your replies..... after work, while it was still light.... I took
another look.
Seems the backfire blew off a vac hose on the vac tee at the back of the motor.
Connected the hose and all is well.

thanks guys
