9 3/8" = This is the only F100 that used these axle bearings.
------------------------------------------------------------ C8TZ-4010-A .. Axle Housing / Fits: 1968/69 F100 w/a 9" Ring Gear
(C9AZ-1225-A replaced C1SZ-1225-A & B7A-1225-A).

If the parts were the same, the part numbers would be the same.
As y'all can see...they are not the same.
Internally only the two pinion bearings are the same between the 9" and 9 3/8" rear end.
I put a 9 3/8" pumpkin into the 9" housing of my '67 390, 4-speed Mustang. Only thing I did was notch the housing and use the Mustang axles.
My '72 F100 short bed has a 9 3/8" diff from the factory; the housing is notched from the factory to accomodate the larger ring gear.
The different part numbers for the different housings reflect the notched and non-notched housings.
I have put a 9" center section in a 9 3/8" case in my 66 Galaxie. The center section was out of my 68 Mustang and was put in for it's better gear ratio and trac loc. I did this well over 20 years ago, nobody even knew what a 9 3/8" rear was, most still don't, and it has been in there ever since, works fine except I would like to change it out to a more mileage friendly ratio now. Getting older sure changes the priorities. I didn't have to change any bearings in center section or axles.

Just what I wanted to hear! Great news. Thanks a lot. I know the mixed answers are largely from trying to listen to the books and codes but the best are the tried and true ones so I appreciate all the help either way. Thanks David you've made my day! Take care

David if 2.80:1 sounds like a gear you want...I would be willing to trade you if you had 3.50s in there and then some. I doubt you would want that high but you never know! Its non posi too to add to the excitement. Take care

Thanks for the offer, I have a "couple" of cruisin' ratios laying around and I will probably put the 3.91's in a 69 F100 along with a tremec 5 speed to make them usable.

You can put a 9" pumpkin in a 9 3/8" housing without modification, but not vice-versa.

Not that it matters in my case but the only mods vice versa would be the notching needed to put the 9-3/8" center into the 9" rear end housing. Thats probably really rare to ever see that anyways. Thanks for all the help.
