is there a 5 speed or a over drive for the 1985 f250 6.9 diesel or a good swap that would do the same thing?
Yes. Find around a 87-93 f250 or 350 with a 7.3 diesel and a zf 5speed. It will bolt right in if you get all the parts, and it has an overdrive 5th.
You can also install a E4OD, but it's more involved. First you need a tranny that is upgraded to 95-up specs(has all the improvements in it) and you will also have to get the computer that runs it and it's associated wiring and sensors. This is an automatic overdrive, and was also installed behind the 87-93 7.3 diesel, which is basically the same engine as your 6.9.
