tire size help please

Can anyone tell me if my 255/70R16 tires can be replaced by these snow tires- Dunlop M&S, 265/70-16? (This is for a 1999 F-150 Lariat) I do not know enough about reading the tire codes to know if I would be compromising safety/handling/ or anything else.
Please help.
Thanks,
Greg

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Dec-01 AT 12:16 PM (EST)]Going from 255 to 265 will not be much of a size change. You shouldn't have any problems. The only thing I would be concerned about is the load rating. If the load rating of the tires are different, then you will have to be careful about what you haul around with lower rated tires. If they are higher rated, no problem. The tire shop should be able to explain all this for you when you get the new tires. Good Luck!

255/70R16 = 255 millimeters wide. The sidewall is 70% as tall as the tire is wide, 255 * .7 = 178.5 millimeters. 25.4 millimeters per inch, so the sidewall is 178.5/25.4 = 7.02 inches, and the tire is 255/25.4 = 10.04 inches wide. The height of the sidewall has to be taken twice, and the rim size once to get the height of the tire. So 2 * 7.02 + 16 = 30.04 inches tall. So you have a tire 30 inches tall, and 10 inches wide.. A 265/70R16 is 30.6" tall and 10.4" wide, so there shouldn't be any issues trying to make them fit. If you replace all 4 tires there won't be any problem, if you only replace two and have ABS it could cause your brakes to act weird. And if you have 4wd and mix sizes it will add stress to your driveline while you are in 4wd.
