Hello newbie here from the Live Free or Die state--N.H. and was wondering about a few ? about my truck.. 01' super duty crew cab(4 doors) and 5.4L-V-8---89,000miles. Questions are when ever I turn the heat on the balancer pully (I think) on the engine makes a weird noise like it comes on and off every 2 seconds. The dealer has changed the humonake(spelling) balancer and has told me that noice is normal. I have checked with everyone else with the same truck and engine and theirs do not make that noise.Only when the heat is on.. Sorry if this ? is on the wrong posting, and thanks in advance for any help on this...
if it was the a/c compressor when the clutch engages then there would be noise, suggest that you run the motor and heat to create the noise and visually check for the noise under the hood. pay attention to the a/c unit and see if that is where it is coming from.
sounds more to me like the compressor for the AC is cycling in and out and may have a issue.
Never heard of the harmonic balancer making noise.
Yea the small star looking metal on the harmonic balancer woulnd turn on and off when ever the heat came on..but with that being replaced that star looking thing does'nt turn and the noise is still there Thnaks for spelling that for me by the way (harmonic balancer)
normaly if u have a bad HVAC fan noise it would occur all the time..
but its possible that certain HVAc settings might put the fan under different strain, perhaps enuf to cause it to make noise only in certain configs..
but it would be unlikely to be heard under the hood... esp over the sound of the motor... i would think it would be louder in the cab actually..
Are you talking about under the dash area? for the heater box? I know it's from the engine and it was the balancer at stated in the last few post. Would any of the pullys on the belt back noisies when heat on? Cant fine the issue.. sounds like this brbrbrbrrrrr-click (few seconds of quiet and then) brrrbrrrrbrrrr click. All the while the heat is on. heat goes off, it stops. They replaced the harmonic balancer(new)
out of curiosity does the noise go away if you aren't running the defroster. mine makes a similar noise when the defrost is on and the ac clutch pully is engaging. does it about every 2-5 minutes if the truck is just idling in the driveway. mines an 01 250sd 4x4 5.4l

I check that out, but I think it does make the noise with any heat on. Once I shut the heat off no more. If it's the clutch pully making the noise does it mean I need to change something???? My is also 01' 250 with 5.4 L

It sounds like the clutch on the air conditioning compressor kicking in and out. It will do this if your heat control is on either defrost or mix position. If you're low on refrigerant, it will cycle on for only a few seconds and then the low suction pressure limit will kick out the clutch on the compressor. If this is the case, you'll be able to actually see the compressor start and stop by watching it. If this is happening, you probably need to add some refrigerant to your system.
The AC compressor will cycle on and off in any position other than vent and off I believe. So if you have yours in defrost, or floor and defrost, the AC compressor may still be cycling on and off and causing this noise.

the noise mine makes is normal but as I said it only cycles every 2-5 min. if yours is cycling almost nonstop seconds apart there maybe something else going on
