So here is my question....i'm looking to wire my winch in on my 07 truck...only catch is i DON'T want to cut my battery cable...and the stock battery only has one post.....Is anyone aware of a dual adaptor for the top post batteries?
I'd even be able to use an adapter that clamped on, had a post, and a stud w/wing nut.....any sort of adapter to allow to connections to one post...
It would probably fit....but i'm leary to run that much amperage through that small of a contact patch....fitting there it probably won't sit flat against anything.....
I am going through a similar issue with winch connection. I had been using Optima blue tops which had the top post and a set of threaded post next to them. I am trying other batteries now and I don't have any room in my current terminals to add another pair of 6ga wires. I have two options, swap one of my fuse blocks for another with two outputs or go into the side terminals. I am shopping for side terminal bolts now, and this sounds like your best option, providing your battery has both styles.
I would take the clamp bolt you have now out, and find another that is longer. Put the new bolt back in with a nut and clamp the terminal back on the battery. Then you should have plenty of threads and the first nut to install the ring terminal on, and then squeeze it with a second nut with a locknut or star washer. Should have plenty of amp capacity.
I wonder if it is large enough.....the cabling i'm using is #2 welding cable which has a OD of .49.....those bolts can't be more than .25 diameter....Hum....
It's not just the bolt diameter. The surface on both sides of the connector are where the electrons pass. 1/0 wire can do very well with only a 3/8" bolt, so I suspect 1/4" would do for 2ga.
The ones I am familiar with are usually a 5/16 bolt. I am not familiar with all the newer trucks, but most have a short cable that also goes over to a starter relay. Do you have this setup, and do the studs on it have enough room to sneak another terminal underneath?
