If you put that cam in you'll have a screamer of a motor with absolutely no guts below 3000rpm, so plan on 4.xx gears and a 2500rpm stall converter.. assuming you have an auto. If that wasn't what you had in mind now's the time to make another choice.

BTW.. You'll need some violently expensive linkbar roller lifters($350-500 a set) and matching pushrods to install a roller cam in that block.

Your completely right, Conanski. I already have an ATI built C6 with a stall converter built for that new cam and a set of 4.55 gears with a 35 inch tire, Im just not sure how much my mileage will go down. I drive the truck every day about 45 miles round trip and to the desert when i go. i get 18 in town and 17 highway now with the carb tuned very well. Do you think the gear vendors and a mass air type fuel injection will make up for the loss?

P.S. i have a 4.10 ratio now with a 35 inch tire

Another question, with a stall converter, at what point does it operate at its highest effiency. Im not really sure if a 2500 stall starts working at 2500 or spins at the same rate as the motor at 2500?

Those are great milage numbers for a truck like that, so unfortunately I think there's nowhere to go but down. The cam you currently have is a bit of a mismatch to the heads and intake, it should produce respectable low rpm power but is certainly limiting HP on the top end. The other cam will help the motor flow much better at rpms but more air needs more gas so that's where the milage will be impacted. I don't think EFI will help you here, carbs work fine once there is some intake velocity and your setup skips right over the rpm range where this is an issue. An OD unit will definitely help hwy milage though, I bet you could get into the low 20s with it.

A standard TC always has some slip. regardless of stall speed, it's only those with a locking mechanism that will match input and output rpms. A locking TC also reduces tranny temps considerably when locked so it should be something to consider. The stall speed is supposed to be the max engine rpm you will see with the vehicle in gear and the brakes held, but coverters will often flash a little higher than this on the street when you first step into the throttle. It's also common that the vehicle will begin to move at rpms below the stall speed, the device works with fluid after all so the rating is more of a range than an on/off switch.

Good info, will the lockup- type converter give me better highway gas mileage? Dont i need an electronic transmission to hook that up? Is there a better cam for my setup, in your opinion?
Thanks for all the knowledge!

Yes a lockup TC alone will reduce your hwy engine rpms and improve milage, but you'll have to do some searching around to see what's available, I don't know if they make these for the C6.
You should be able to find a similar grind flat tappet camshaft so the expensive roller lifters aren't required, the Crane 440131 is an example. If you have an '87 or later block it will have the top of the lifter bosses machined flat and a pair of standoffs in the middle of the valley, this is where the factory lifter retainer assembly(spider and dogbones) is mounted. These can be found in most 5.0 car engines after about '88 and trucks motors after '92, I got the assembly below complete with roller lifters from a local junkyard motor for under $100, this made upgrading this motor to a roller cam much more cost effective.

Guess i need a later block, or like you said some crazy-expensive roller lifters. At least the good thing is i won't ever need another set after i buy the first ones. Well, HOPEFULLY!

im not shure. i had an 82 chevy c-10 with a lock up TC that rarely worked. there was a 1 wire pigtail that i ran to a toggle swich and mounted to the dash. gave me complete contol. im pretty shure its just a cluch plate actuated by hydrolic pressure via an electric selinoid. but i dont know if the contol valves were in the trans or if it was all part of the TC.
