sluggish 400

hey guys, i recently got a 79 f350 with a 400 on it. its basically bone stock, expect for the glasspack and a universal air cleaner. i got the carb rebuilt, changed all plugs cap rotor, all that stuff. ive checked if i have any vacuum leaks but there are none. my motor seems a little sluggish. i mean it picks up and goes, but i feel like it should have more torque, plus my mpg are terrible like 5 to the gallon it feels like, or the gauge is messed up. what do you guys recommend me doing, i dont really want to start beefing up this motor because ill be rebuilding it next year. it also seems like it bogs some then starts going. i havent checked timing or compression yet.

If it were mine I would start by checking the timing, inspecting the ignition and looking at a spark plug or two. If I got no hints from that I would do a compression check. If the compression is good, or a spark plug looked fuel fouled it is then it is time to dive into the carburetor.
