i was wondering what does it run to get the rings replaced on a 351. my truck has 217000 and want to put new rings on it. an hopefully will get little more power and better mileage and what not.
With that milage if it burns oil and/or has low compression it needs a rebuild, replacing the rings won't help. If it doesn't burn oil then I suggest you leave it alone and drive it until it quits. What milage does it get now? Have you pulled the codes? Sensor problems will hurt milage more than a worn engine.
Based on his other post I think this is a carbureted engine.
To add to what ski correctly stated, you can't take an engine apart with the sole purpose of replacing rings. It is ALWAYS exploratory surgery. You have no way of knowing what you will find until you disassemble, inspect and measure.
The possiblity, as slim as it is, exists that you might have minimal cylinder wear such that it might hold a set of rings. The possibility is remote, but it's there. Tearing an engine apart without being prepared to do what needs to be done, however, is a mistake. Be prepared to bore it, do a valve job, turn the crankshaft or whatever else the exploration determines is needed. Anything else is a BAD PLAN.
