key question
I just bought a 97 F150 it only came with one key and the key fob. The key will not unlock or lock the doors it only works in the ignition and works to disable the airbag. The only way to unlock the truck is to use the key fob. My question is there supposed to be a seperate door key? The key doesn't have a chip in it so could I just try and have another key made to see if that will work?
No, someone probably replaced the lock cyl. and threw away or lost the origional keys. The ignition key is also the door key. However, the door cyl. cut on the key can be still done by a locksmith. You need the code off the door cyl. and then it can be cut onto the key. front cuts are for the igition and rear cuts are for the door if I remember right. If you want a spare key it will have to be cut and then programmed.
When we had the ignition cylinder replaced, we had the locksmith match the key to the door key. So you could do what they suggested above, where one side opens the door and the other side works the ignition, or you can have the ignition changed to match the door key.
I am thinking a little diffrent . Sence the key works the ign and the air bag disable ,I would bet it is the original , and the door lock cylinders are are just rusted up. Try to spray some PB blaster or some good penatrate into them. They may loosen up.
While I agree it may just be rusted up it may also have had the ignition lock cylinder replaced. The key uses 10 cuts, cuts 1 2 3 4 and 6 come pre cut when you buy a Motorcraft lock cylinder, and the Ford dealership cuts 5 7 8 9 and 10 to match the door lock cylinder. Aftermarket ignition lock cylinder maybe?
