'51 f1 update

Ok, heres a little update, haven't really got much done. I redid the garage, insulation and plywood walls. However I did get my '67 GTO tilt column to work, rather than spending money I don't have on an ididit or flaming river piece. Took a few pics of the frame work,, I haven't touched it yet,, I'm going to box it in at lrast back to the trans crossmember. I also opened up the factory gauge hole,, not finised yet,,, here are the pics,,, still more to come..

Nice work, what IFS is that? Looks M-II-ish? IFS needs a stiff frame to work properly, so boxing is a very good idea.

Man, it sure is rusty up in your neck of the woods!

Nice swap on the front end. Not to criticize just a couple quick notes, I agree with Ross that the F-1 frame should be boxed also I would suggest that you give you welds a little more attention as it appears that you may have some cold lap or a lack of fusion, which may crack over time. Once you have boxed your rails, v-notch the current welds and re-weld with a little more heat and slightly slower travel speed. I would then suggest that you fish plate across your seams in a manner that will result in a criss-cross weld between the newly attached frame material and the F-1 frame. In your case with the Z cut, a rectangular fish plate inside and outside of the frame should provide adequate reinforcement for the weld, provided adequate fusion is achieved.

Cutting and sectioning a frame, particularly in such a short segment over an area that will be exposed to a number of oposing forces requires special attention.
