Question spline count?

1992 F150 4x4
300ci 4.9L 5spd manual

im close to getting my gears but i was wondering if anyone could tell me how much splines i have without having to pull the axles and counting them?
in the back i have a 9" which came in the truck when i bought it and dont know what the gearing is either.in the front i have a dana44 reverse out of a 78?
also i was planning to run 38" tires so i am getting 4.56
some ring and pinion sets say for use with 3.91 and up carrier.4wheel parts
what dat mean?

Well with the dana 44 if you go with the 4.56 gears because of size difference is why you need a different carrier. I had to get 1 for my truck also cause it had 3.55 in the front when I got it but I just went with a spool. Also in the rear are you sure its not a 8.8? I beleive they quit putting 9"s in them after 86 and I think thats were your VSS is also

Different size as in the u can only shim so much and since ur pinion gear changes( gets smaller with shorter gears) and the thickness of the ring gear changes with the shorter gears is why the different carrier is needed to help make up for that.

and also where can i find some cheap carriers for the two axles?or is buying 1 online pretty much the only route?if so what kind of carreier is choice?i was looking hard at auburn limited slip for the dana jes cause it was the cheapest.and as far as the 9" rear goes ill just count the splines and go with the 4.56.

Sounds like your truck is going wheelin so I think you would be disapointed with the aurburn, get a locker like a detroit.

Must of the time you can make a good guess on the spline count of a 9" if you know the axle bearing style.

The 9" has a gear split to I beleive at 4.10 so find your gear ratios by counting the turns and shop acordingly.
