I was wondering if my truck (73 F250 CS) has two-piece wheels. When I think of two-piece wheels I think of those from a 2 ton or greater truck, fastened around the radius of the wheels to the hub. My truck is second owner, and I'm relatively comfortable stating that the wheels are OE considering the truck's history and condition. So, I guess I'm wondering a couple of things. First, did CS trucks normally come with two-piece wheels? Secondly, does anybody know where I can view a picture of one so I can compare to my wheels? If not, maybe somebody would be kind enough to describe them a bit? I searched on many variations of "two+piece+wheels" and found a lot of discussion, but no descriptions.
those i beleave are split rims and are very dangerous to change without a cage. i have used logging chains to change them but do not recomend trying this unless you have seen it done before. my 76 had them so im pretty sure yours would. there is a ring with a split in it next to bead of tire
Dangit, maybe split rim is what I meant.. I don't think there is a ring near the bead, but it's dark and raining -- I'll have to look tomorrow. Thanks! BTW, I walk right by my 06 SuperCrew King Ranch most days, en-route to this old truck. My family thinks I'm nuts, but it makes me feel like a kid again to drive that old 73.....
I believe Paul is correct, those sound like split rims to me. And my 77 had them from the factory. Best thing to do is get a set of regular steel wheels. Don't know if you have 16" or 16.5", but wheels from an F-250 or F-350 up through 1996 will have the same lug spacing.
I may be mistaken, but I believe it is getting more difficult to find tire shops that will mount split rims.
Thanks again. It'll hopefully be a while before it's an issue -- it had new tires on it when I bought it. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find the ring Paul mentions.
yes most tires shops around me will not do split rims. i have split rims on my 77 250 and my 82 700 and am looking to upgrade to alloy or regular steel rims. i have changed and mounted new rubber on split rims myself, but do take precautions and do not transport them with alot of air in them. dont see many passenger vehicles or trucks with split rims anymore
wow thats outrageous. i just had a flat on my 250 last week and the tire place where i do all my farm business at did it for $40 including the tube. they where hesitant to do it but because i am a regular they where persuaded easily. they did charge me about 15$ more than a regular mount with a tube but i was happy i didnt have to waste my time doing it. i really need some updated rims!, but it is kinda cool having the OEM rims.
If you have split rims get rid of them. They're dangerous. And not just when mounting tires. I've seen them break around the groove where the lock ring goes after they've gotten rusty and old.
