Ok, so we had our first snow of the season yesterday, I used my 4wd for about 2 miles, and then the truck sat all day (98 Expy 4.6). When I got in my truck to drive it last night, the transmission was in park, however it was showing somewhere between P and R on the dash. The drive position is about where neutral used to be, so to get it into drive I have to click the shifter into the slot that shows ''2''. Any idea why this is so? I didn't hear anything happen and it shifted fine. The truck itself runs and drives OK, but its pretty annoying to think you're in drive and find out you're really in neutral!
The carriage that carries the needle is driven to the right (pulling down on the gear shift) and is returned by a spring. The carriage is binding up and needs to be lubricated. Some threads here concerning it, and some have been able to get at it from below. Not me however. The dash cluster needs to come out of you can't get it from below. I'm just living with it for now.
Shift indicator is controlled by a smal cable below the dash/steering column. There is a small wheel you can turn to adjust the cable a little. After that, if you still need to tighten the cable more, you can do what I did to fix mine. Get a plasic cable tie and take up the slack by tying it off. Tt's worked on my 98 Expy for the past 4-5 years, without pulling out the instrument cluster. Access it from below the dash by removing trim panels.
