Ok fellas, my 1988 F-250 xlt Lariat 4x4 supercab with the nice big 7.3 diesel in her needs some new shocks. 3 of the 4 on it are leaking. I could care less about what kind of ride i get because its a truck and it should ride like one. I need shocks that can take a beating because the truck weighs in empty at 6300 pounds and occaisionally finds 2 tons of gravel in the bed. I do a good bit of towing in the summer. I am open to suggestions on shocks for this truck. I hate to spend money but I always want to do it right the first time so anything is a possibility. So, what do you think?
I just put Ford Shocks on my truck and the ride is unbelieveable. I do go off roading a lot but it is a half ton and doesn't see any weight. I have heard the Rancho 9000's are a very stiff shock, but this may be good for a truck as heavy as yours. Good Luck!
I've heard good things about the Rancho RS 5000 and RS 9000 series. I know on the 9000s there are ***** on the shocks to adjust the ride which I like but with options like this comes a price tag. At the local parts store they are 76 bucks a piece, ouch. That's probobly what I'll end up with but I'm still looking.
I seldom carry the loads you mentioned, but I'm very pleased with the Pro-Comp 9000s I put on all 4 corners of my truck. Maybe that's because my old shocks were that bad...I dunno. The January edition of "Petersen's 4-Wheel and Off-Road" magazine did a pretty comprehensive comparison of all the major brands of shocks and they're pros and cons. They didn't really come up a "top shock" per say, because different people tend to look for different attributes...like you said, highway ride wasn't terribly important to you, but performance was. Maybe if you can scrounge up the mag and see what they say about the things that are important to you, you can make more of an informed decision. Good luck.
Thomasr, Thanks for mentioning the article, i get the magazine and couldn't remember that article. I'll dig through the pile of mags and hopefully find it. When I make a decision I'll post back here. I'm not in too much of a hurry because I won't be doing anything too serious with the truck till spring.

im runnin the rancho 9000's on my f-150 and they are great, i have the indash control that you can get for them and its great to adjust the ride for what i am doin when i fourwheel it. they're not that stiff at all, just depends on what setting you have them on (1-5), for carrying loads like you do i think that the 9000's would do fine since you could stiffin up the ride for the loads and soften it for when your not haulin stuff. they are kinda expensive but i think that they were worth it, i like them a lot.
