hey guys thinking about doing an engine swap but need a little info before i start
i got a 96 fl150 with a broke down 302
and can get an 88 f150 with a strong 351 but a bad transmition
so-can i put the 88 351 in place of my 96 302 (the302 has a good transmition but will the newer transmition of the 302 bolt up to the older 351)
The 302 and 351 use the same bellhousing bolt pattern, and your '96 is mass air and uses the HO/351 firing order, so this is a bolt-in swap using the existing computer, but there still some work to do. You will need the complete 5.8EFI motor including the intake and fuel rail, you will also need a '96 5.8 distributor, flexplate/flywheel, and crank balancer. The reason for the balancer is because the '96 truck uses a crank sensor the '88 doesn't have. The old motor also uses a distributor mounted TFI module while your truck has a fender mounted module. The 5.8 uses a 28oz balance flexplate while the 5.0 uses 50oz. You'll also need the passenger side exhaust manifold because that's where the EGR connects, and you'll have to widen the exhaust Y pipe becaue the 5.8 motor is wider. The intake air sensor hole in the lower intake manifold on the 5.8 will have to be plugged, this sensor is out by the airbox on the '96, and the knock sensor will have to be disabled unless you drill and tap the 5.8 block for it. It think that's it.
