Should be simple? Right?

I have an '03 Expedition XLT with about 80,000 miles. I have a small tick coming from the engine. My wife was complaining about it and I told her it was just the injectors ticking but she insist on taking it in. (We have a bumper to bumper extended warranty). Low and behold the mechanic said it is just your injectors ticking and they are fine. However when I got it home and the first time I used it about a day later right when I started it, it took a couple seconds for the engine to smooth out like the timing would have been off. Cleared up and ran fine. Now about three days later I have a check engine light and when I idle the RPM's go 500 to 1500 in about one second intervals up and down. when it hits the 500 point the head and tail lights dim and then it shoots to about 1500 rpm's. Could it be something as simple as a sensor left unplugged or a coincidence that my alternator is going out at the same time. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!!

Your alternator is fine. At 500 RPM the alternator is spinning too slow to put out enough power. Clean or replace your IAC valve to stabilize the idle and the electrical power will be back to normal.
