I didn't want to interrupt your tutorial, so here's a new thread with my questions. I have to guess this was an expensive speaker, but did the manufacture have the replacement parts listed? Is there a performance upgrade in doing this or just a repair to expensive equipment?

The sub being reconed is a DC LVL 5 18

Very much worth the re-cone. Not sure of the retail price on them but they are a very expensive sub. And being it's an SPL based sub Re-cones are easy to be had.
There was an upgrade from the 1st line of sub that I got to the new ones. The tinsel leads are now hand sewn into the spiders and they have dbl leads. This will help with high power applications and to prevent tinsel slap and tear out.
