Exclamation oil consumption

Just curious as to how much oil everyone else's use? My 6.9 doesn't leak but with 273000 miles on it, it uses oil like the "blue room" uses toilet paper. I use about a gallon every 200-300 miles. Have checked the cdr, it's good. Just burns it like cazy. I'm sure it has little compression left. Have to hit the glow plugs every time I start it (cold). Have thought about rebuilding it, dropping a cummins 5.9 or 8.3 in it, or possibly an '89 300 I-6 efi motor I have.

Mine does close to the same - about a quart every 100 miles - and the compression numbers aren't that bad (~350-390 dead cold) and it puts up 17psi warm oil pressure idling and nearly 40 psi at cruise.

I'm going to change my valve guide seals to see if that helps. With the turbo on it I've been told by a local diesel shop that it is pulling more vacuum than it did stock, so valve seals could make a big difference.

I'm also wondering if at least part of it could be leaking past the seals in the turbo.

Nope. A quart every 100 miles is $12 every 400 miles (3 cents a mile) on top of fuel which is about 19 cents/mile right now ($2.70 a gallon/15mpg = 19 cents).

Suppose I were to spend just $1000 doing a complete rebuild and it resulted in my burning ZERO oil afterward (not likely, but just suppose). At 3 cents a mile it would take 33,333+ miles to get back that $1000.

And BTW, I'm pretty sure that honing the cylinders out, getting oversized pistons and rings, having the heads done, and getting all the gaskets to put it back together would run me at least a grand - minimum - even if I didn't touch any of the bearings, and did all the work myself.

When you look at it that way, 3 cents a mile for oil looks pretty cheap. Especially since it would take me at least 5 years to put 33k on my truck no more than I use it...

i usually have about 7-10 psi at idle (warm) and 30-40 going down the road. and Cheeper, thats the way I look at it too. might do a swap next year though. if diesel stays $0.80 - $1.10 higher than gas (which is BS anyways), might be dropping that 300 I6 in it.
