my engine is knocking bad. it fires up just fine and has no other problems, but the knocking is pretty extreme. in an earlier post I mentioned that a mechanic thought that it might be a rod. Any ideas? Thanks guys.
I've been trying to kinda get an idea, it's time for a rebuild anyways. I've never had to do that yet, but if i'm gonna get into it at all might as well try and get everything square!
Knocking or ticking? Lifters "tick", but rods "knock".
Using a broom handle(or even a long 3/8" extension), put it to your ear and then touch the block down low and up around intake. You'll quickly discover what the problem is.
Since it's an FE, be sure to read the forums here before you have someone rebuild it.
Stock Ford truck engines have timid cams and low compression. Fine with 25 cent gas and farm driving.
A slightly different cam, and compression in 9.5 zone, along with a properly tuned carb & headers can net you twice the stock HP and the same MPG, if not better mpg.
It doesn't cost much more to rebuild this way--all that stuff is going to be replaced anyway (internals I mean) so having different parts installed shouldn't raise the cost dramatically.
I'm supposed to talk to the machine shop on Monday. I hear that they are a pretty repuitable company. Do you know of any forums off hand that have a rebuild project parts list that would help me get the most bang for my buck?
Just post here in the FE forum about what you want your engine to do (truck or car) and what you need it to accomplish - daily driver, towing, all-out-muddin', you get the idea.
The guys here will be more than happy to spend your money
