lift pump question

Hi Folks,

I'm new here and I need some help. I jumped into a major project on my first diesel ('99 f250). I'm installing a conversion kit to run veg oil and I may be in a little over my head (I'm not really much of a mechanic, but can't afford to pay for someone else to install it). My question isn't about the conversion itself, but while I was working with the fuel lines around the lift pump I noticed that the inlet and outlet on the pump are 5/16" lines while the rest of the supply line is 3/8". Is there a good reason for this or did the previous owner cheat and put in an incorrect part? My first clue was some crazy patched together lines just before the pump and a slow fuel leak as a result.

I can only guess that the installer of the pump was cutting corners to save money. Welcome to FTE, and someone that can do better than guess will give you a better answer.

Welcome to .

Like Mark said, PO may have used his own Rube Goldberg way of installing a fuel pump.

Or, and this is also a guess, the previous owner may have done an in-tank mod and installed a pre-pump fuel filter which is now missing. It would be nice to have a pic of what you see.

This is the stock connector that should be at the back of the fuel pump.

This is a pic of my pre-pump filter for illustration of what he may have done.

Thanks for the photo. You're right about the prefilter being removed. I was told it was all stock, no mods when I bought it so I don't think he did anything in-tank. The connector is the same as shown in your image. How important is it to get the right size pump in there?

I replaced the stock pump with a Walbro GSL 392. LINK to my pump install.
You will see that the size of the Walbro is smaller but it is rated at a higher pressure and volume than the stock pump. 60 to 65 PSI at wide open throttle is what most like to achieve. A few have mounted a pump in the tank to ensure no air enters the fuel system.
