I'm not sure where to locate this but I haven't been able to find a similar thread. I'm in the process of swapping a 460 into my 74 F100. When I'm done I'll have a 390 and a C6 to sell. The tranny needs rebuild but the engine is strong (doesn't touch oil or run hot). I think it has around 130k on it. I've been checking Craig's list etc and prices are all over the place. What do you think is a fair asking price? Thanks for your help.
Right now, with the economy the way it is, $50.00 would be about right, a year from now maybe $350.00.
You have to keep this in mind, it aint what it's worth, it's what someone will pay you for it. At the moment folk are sitting on their money. IMHO

VERY TRUE. Its worth what ever the market can bear! Just like Houses, cars or anything for that matter. Maybe a $100 right now. Just depending on where your located! JMHO
I never gave more then $150 for a running FE. Even during the high times. Thats a lot of miles too. I think $350 is a little steep myself. That's just me though. Also like Russ said, A dime a dozen!!! Good luck
I'd actually advise selling the tranny and engine separately...just because a "BAD" tranny brings a negative conotation to the sale. I'd say you could probably get $350 fairly easily for the engine, and probably $50-100 for a bad tranny. If you sell them together...you'd basically have to give away the tranny.
Prove me wrong, offer your $350.00, put your money where your mouth is. I'll bet he doesn't have a better offer.
In my opinion, 130K is right about where a carbureted V8 starts loosing power, and the compression numbers start getting schetchy. I found a fresh 390 longblock on craigslist (local to me) for $450. The last junkyard in Eldorado county sells all FEs as 390s for $6-800, no matter the stroke!

Well I have to Dis-agree......I dont care how many miles are on it! Its all depends on how it was treated thru-out its life ! I have seen them come thru the old shop that at 50 or 60K on them, that were junk, and have seen others come in with 160K on them, and could hardly find a ring ridge in the cylinders....
I think Carls last rebuild on his F250 416"er....has 280K on it..and I think he said it just now developed some rocker wear ! But i guess when you build them beyond Factory specs like Pratt and Whitney, and make them a custon blueprinted Motor...You can run um for ever !! LOL...
A few months back I pulled the heads of My wifes brand X motor in her old car....It has 257K on it..Never been gone thru...and I couldnt find a ring ridge in any of the cylinders.. So it went back together with a gasket set...and I just sold it today.... (yep G ! Finally ) the old GP is down the road now! LOL ...With 257k on the clock...and the guy couldnt believe how well it ran !

I did sell a set of 406 cast iron exhaust manifolds in cherry condition for $200 a couple of years ago. I also sold one set of 427 cast iron exhaust manifolds for about the same amount. I knew I was not going to use them, so I gave those guys a great deal. The look on their faces was worth the low price. I just hope they used them and did not sell them for a profit.
