Thanks guys, I just ripped the head off my '88 ranger back in May and replaced the head bolts then. They showed alot more wear then my current bolts off my '86 460. Just didn't know if that was standard procedure.
Autozone.com shows a headbolt kit for $212.99. Part Number:8566
"Most" older engines did not require head or main bolt replacement. Rod bolt replacement was always good insurance however. Newer engines have Torque to Yeild bolts that you use once, and throw away.
I did have a main bolt on a 460 that was not taking torque like the others. I kept cranking on it waiting for the wrench to click, it kept going, going and going. I stopped, pulled the bolt out, and tried again. I kept going and going, I stopped, pulled it out, found that it had grew!! 1/4" Had I kept trying to get the wrench to click, I would have broken it off in the hole.
