I just put a metal roof on an unheated garage/shed building that had been leaking for many years...in some spots the rafters and decking were literally collapsing.
The owner wanted to keep the cost down as much as possible, and I told him the rotted joists had to replaced in order to support the perlins, but replacing the rotted decking was optional (just cut the bad stuff out).
The only issue I did not foresee is that in the places where there is no decking, the underside of the metal sometimes gets a lot of condensation on it. I guess I should have put tar paper or plastic over these areas but what can I do now? Would insulation help? The building has no ventilation, I suspect that's part of the problem.
Probably not too cost effective, but you could have spray foam insulation applied, thin layer, not usual full depth. I'd put it over the whole roof. Or go full depth if you think future use might involve adding heat......
Do not worry about it. It should not condensate as long as there is air flowing underneath the metal. By trying insulation (except sprayfoam) or plastic might make it worse. Metal roofing that does not need a solid deck was meant for outbuildings (Barns, sheds, garages, etc). I installed a lot of metal roofing for shopping centers, barns, and garages and never had an issue with condensation. If in the future the garage would get heated, go with sprayfoam insul though.
