Yeah the thunderbolts were ford factory race cars with the 427 and fiberglass hood with the tear drop hood scoop, they were bad to the bone. I don't know what an original would be worth, but I see clones on ebay all the time for 50,000.00$ and those are just copies. The clones allways seem to be automatics, where as the real thunderbolts were 4-speed cars. TASCA ford sponsored one in the mid 60's and still has thiers in thier museum. They also sponsored a 66 mustang 2+2 with a 427 SOHC, or 427 cammer as they were called. The 427 cammer was a 600 hp create engine sold by ford, it was never put in to a production car by ford. However, you could buy cars through tasca with the cammer installed for race only. Dove manufacturing down the road from me still builds 427's including the cammer. There even liecenced by ford to use ford factory part numbers for a perfect restoration. They deal in FE big blocks, they also do the 390 and 428 CJ motors. However, they are not cheap by any means. You can get complete engines or parts.

Yeah Dove racing is always at the engine masters. They brought a 352 last year. It seems like every time I see nostalgia drags in hot rod that the fords are usually the favorites to win. Its great!! They are usually thunderbolt clones like you said!
