Hi, I've got a 1997 F-250 Heavy Duty model and from what I understand is, it was strongly designed off of the 1992-1996 F-250 and F-350 trucks. My question is, one factory option is to add a second alternator for the tow package. But, the guy I bought the truck from obviously didn't get it. Now, how do I go about adding a second alternator to the truck? Where do I mount it? Different sized belt? Mounting bolts? The whole nine yards. I've got a sound system in it that's drawing about 6000 watts. And I feel like everything is going to die soon. Plus, I also want cab lights for the truck, not sure how much they draw, but it can't be much. Plus fog lights, and marker lights on the sides. So, if anyone could give me any help, it would be great. It's got a 5.8L 351-C in it and it's 2x4 with an extended cab. Thanks.
The easiest way to add a 2nd alternator is to find a donor truck in a wrecking yard that already has all of the brackets, harnesses and alternators that you need, not to mention the nuts and bolts.
An easier route might be to just upgrade your alternator to something with higher output.
At 6000 watts, at 12 volts, that's 500 amps?!?!?!?!?
Good luck on finding two alternators that are going to put out 250 amps each, much less at reasonable RPMs (certainly not at idle) and do it when they get hot under the hood.
