I have a 91 f-350 crew cab has the 7.3 idi ive had this truck since april. this truck is my work horse on the job daily in construction work. this is my first diesel and really did not know what to expect from it. it had 280,000 well cared for miles when i bought it. I say well cared for because you could have eaten off the carpets and seats of this one. and the engine bay was clean and neat. the guy was a maintainance nut.
Anyway first question are these engines normally sluggish while pulling heavy load such as my 30' 10,000 lb camper. when i had hooked to it this summer it almost died on the hills and such. I mean it would come down to like 20mph on hills but it did keep on diggin in. just no big power. would this be normal?
Now empty + racks and boxes this thing has the pickup. and good fuel milage to boot about 20mpg all around.
So im thinking of installing a product like Banks turbo etc.. I would appreciate any and all advise on this and do you think it would be worth it on such an old truck with them miles? talk to me boys! thanks

Reason: P.S How much will i end up spending also?
People are going to tell you that mileage isnt the factor......good maintenance is. As far as the installation, I'll tell you in a few weeks....I am currently waiting on parts to complete my install.....
the banks system is from what I hear the most complete. A.T.S. makes a kit that may not be as complete but some would say is better at getting more hp out of... hypermax also makes a kit but last I checked it was a non-wastgated turbo... not a bad system...just not real good for low rpm boost. All three have there plus's amd minus's... hope that helps
I too have a '91 crewcab 4x4. I bought mine used in '98. It too was very clean with about 135,000 miles, it now has about 225,000 miles. I bought the entire Banks Sidewinder Turbo Kit. Read directions 3 times and installed in one long day. The Banks boys said to follow the directions to the detail. They also said they have more problems with professional mechanics as they tend to not follow directions. I had no problems with the install or the operation during the last 9 years. Dave is correct! According to Banks my truck went from 185 hp to 270 hp and torque went from 365 to 510. I carry an overhead camper while towing a flatbed trailer with a Toyota Landcruiser and can climb mountain passes without much issue. Go for it!
I agree, I bought my complete Banks system used,it came with everything except a few bolts, nothing my local hardware store didn't carry. good advice here as well, read the instructions carefully and several times before you start. One thing I did though and I don't think many people have thought of was when the instructions say to make some relief cuts in the firewall lip and then bend it back, I still had some clearence issues so I just took my sawzall and cut that section of lip off, never got too far with it and don't have any problems, I say this because you will find out how hard it is trying to bend that lip with a minimal amout of room, even after several beers and a lot of cussing it never got easier, not until I took the saw to it anyways.
You will not regret going with a turbo, trust me.
Rob
thanks guys for the input! I am pretty handy around the shop just never really worked on diesels before. will it be necessary to install a pyrometer with the turbo or is that included? thanks again
The banks kit came with everything including a pyro gauge and a EGT (exhaust Temp Gauge). The only thing I added was that insulated foil type material onto the firewall as you have to remove the factory plastic/insulation.
